Polycarbonate CNC Machining Services

Polycarbonate (PC) is a versatile amorphous thermoplastic. Unlike crystalline plastics, it softens gradually instead of melting at a fixed temperature. Polycarbonate is available in both clear and black sheet or bar stock for CNC machining. With its excellent clarity, impact resistance, and reduced weight, PC is often used as a lightweight substitute for glass. Compared with acrylic, it also performs better under elevated temperatures.

When CNC machined, polycarbonate parts are not automatically optically clear, so additional finishing processes are usually necessary. As an engineering-grade plastic, PC stands out for its remarkable toughness against fractures, while also providing optical transparency, resistance to UV exposure, and greater heat resistance than many other commonly used engineering plastics.

Polycarbonate Machining Applications

CNC machining of polycarbonate (PC) is widely used across industries that require parts with high impact strength, optical clarity, and thermal resistance.Common applications include:

  • Protective covers and shields: lightweight, shatter-resistant alternatives to glass for machine guards, safety windows, and transparent enclosures.

  • Optical and lighting components: lenses, light diffusers, and transparent housings that benefit from PC’s clarity and UV resistance.

  • Medical and laboratory equipment: durable, sterilizable components that withstand repeated use and exposure to cleaning agents.

  • Automotive and aerospace parts: lightweight yet tough parts such as instrument panels, light covers, and cabin components.

  • Consumer electronics: durable housings and transparent components for devices that require both toughness and aesthetics.
